Solanum tuberosum L.
A fungal disease of potatoes caused by the soil-borne pathogen Rhizoctonia solani, affecting all plant organs at various developmental stages. It manifests as the formation of black sclerotia on tubers, cankers on sprouts and stems, as well as leaf curling and tuber malformation.

The disease is caused by the basidiomycete Rhizoctonia solani (anamorphic stage) or Thanatephorus cucumeris (telemorphic stage). The pathogen infects sprouts, causing them to die before or after emergence, which leads to poor stand establishment. On tubers, the disease manifests as hard black sclerotia, netted necrosis, pitting, malformation, and cracking.
Brown cankers form on roots, stolons, and stems, and under high humidity, a dirty-white mycelial mat may appear at the base of the stems. Vegetative symptoms include upward cupping of upper leaves and the formation of aerial tubers. Specific resistance genes to the pathogen have not been identified; therefore, varietal resistance is evaluated as a quantitative trait using scoring scales in artificially inoculated fields.
