Yield — Common Hazel

Corylus avellana L.

Hazelnut productivity is estimated by the yield of nuts per bush or per unit area, as well as by biometric indices of crown volume. The indicators depend on genetics, age, the quality of cross-pollination, and the varietal characteristics of green-leaved and red-leaved forms.

In the reference 109 varieties crop Common hazel, where this is mentioned in the description.

To evaluate hazelnut productivity, both absolute indicators in kilograms per bush and index methods that take into account crown volume or trunk cross-sectional area are used. Wild forms demonstrate low yields of up to 3 kg per bush with pronounced periodicity. Cultivated varieties, under proper agrotechnical management, are capable of providing up to 7–10 kg per bush, while commercial plantations reach yields of up to 18 ц/ha.

Realization of yield potential is limited by the need to ensure cross-pollination due to a possible mismatch in the flowering periods of male and female flowers. Varietal identity plays an important role: green-leaved forms generally outperform red-leaved ones in productivity. To maintain stable harvests, regular pruning is required to lighten the crown and rejuvenate stems, which prevents age-related decline in fruit bearing.
