A systemic potato disease caused by the Potato leafroll virus (PLRV), which localizes in phloem tissues. It leads to foliage deformation, starch accumulation, net necrosis of tubers, and a significant reduction in yield.

The causative agent of the disease is the PLRV virus of the family Solemoviridae. The virus is transmitted primarily by the aphid Myzus persicae and causes systemic disorders in the plant. In primary infection, symptoms appear as mild curling and anthocyanin coloration of the apical leaves. Secondary infection, arising from the use of diseased tubers, is characterized by stiffness of the lower leaves, which curl along the midrib, acquiring a leathery texture due to the disruption of assimilate transport.

A characteristic sign of tuber damage is net necrosis of the flesh, manifested by the browning of vascular bundles. When using infected seed material, plant development is stunted and thread-like sprouts appear. Resistance to the virus is considered a complex quantitative trait, including the plant's ability to resist infection via vectors and to limit virus accumulation in tissues.
