When cultivated in greenhouses, radish is often used as a precursor or companion to a main crop. Optimal growth is achieved when the soil is warmed to 15 °C; however, it is critical to avoid overheating the air, which induces excessive foliage growth at the expense of the roots.

Unlike the closely related radish (Raphanus sativus var. radicula), winter radish has higher mineral nutrition requirements, necessitating up to three top dressings per growing season. Uneven irrigation in protected ground inevitably leads to root cracking, and the application of fresh organic fertilizers causes deformation and branching.
