Winter covering of radish is a microclimate management technique aimed at preventing premature seed germination in open fields or optimizing light and temperature conditions in protected cultivation.

For winter sowing in open fields, covering with a mulch layer or coniferous branches protects the soil from freeze-thaw cycles and waterlogging, preventing early seed germination that could result in crop loss during late frosts. Unlike perennial crops, this covering is a temporary measure and is removed at the onset of spring to allow for rapid soil warming.

In winter greenhouses, covering serves as a tool for controlling light and temperature regimes. Since radishes are sensitive to photoperiod and prone to etiolation, it is necessary to maintain a temperature of +6…+8°C after seedling emergence under the cover to prevent excessive foliage growth at the expense of root development.
