Winter hardiness of apple trees
Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh.
Winter hardiness of apple trees is the ability of a tree to withstand a combination of negative factors during the winter period, which determines its cultivation range. It is assessed using a point scale based on the degree of tissue damage to the bark, wood, and buds after severe winters or artif…
In the reference 188 varieties crop Apple, where this is mentioned in the description.
The assessment of apple tree winter hardiness is carried out using two methods: visual analysis of the degree of tissue freezing in field conditions or the laboratory method of artificial freezing in climate chambers. The latter allows for a differentiated study of plant resistance to frost at different stages of winter, including dormancy and thaw periods.
The adopted damage assessment scale ranges from 0 points, corresponding to the absence of damage, to 4–5 points, characterizing severe freezing or plant death. This indicator is not static and depends on the genetic characteristics of the cultivar, the degree of hardening, as well as the tree's condition, its age, the influence of the rootstock, and the crop load in the previous season.
