Castelnovina is an indigenous Ligurian variety that has been cultivated for centuries in the area of the Castelnuovo Magra municipality. The variety is an independent genetic entity included in research on the characterization of Italian cultivars.
The fruits of the variety are small in size and barrel-shaped. The plant is characterized by a high capacity for flowering and high yield. In production, the variety is rarely used as a monovarietal oil; it is more often used in blends with other Ligurian varieties to impart specific organoleptic properties to the oil.
