Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is an autochthonous cultivar traditionally grown on hilly terraces in the vicinity of Messina. The plant is distinguished by high hardiness and adaptability to steep, well-drained volcanic soils.

The oil obtained from the fruits of this small-fruited variety has a specific aroma with peppery notes and hints of almond. In addition to its oil-producing purpose, the variety is considered as an object for processing into table olives.

The variety has the status of rare and endangered, while some publications classify it as an independent cultivated species, and others consider it as a variety of Ogliarola Messinese.
