The term most often refers to the Tuscan table variety Santa Caterina. It is a vigorous tree with a spreading, dense canopy, distinguished by high yield. The fruits are very large (7–9 g) and ellipsoidal in shape. The variety is resistant to cold, but moderately sensitive to fungal diseases, in particular peacock spot.
The name may also be used as a synonym for the French table variety Lucques. The tree has a spreading canopy, and the fruits have a characteristic elongated, asymmetric, crescent shape. The variety is relatively resistant to cold and drought, but is susceptible to Verticillium wilt and a number of other diseases and pests.
