The variety is a product of folk breeding and centuries of selection in Sicily. The fruits have a small size, which makes them unsuitable for table use, but ensures high quality of the resulting oil with a low level of acidity and high polyphenol content.
The plant has high productivity in intensive cultivation systems. Fruit firmness provides the variety with relative resistance to infestation by the olive fruit fly. The variety can also act as a pollinator for other olive varieties.
The distribution area is limited to regions of Sicily, including Agrigento, Palermo, and Caltanissetta. Currently, the variety is attracting the attention of researchers as an object of biodiversity conservation and a promising crop for modern agricultural technologies.
