The variety is endemic to Roussillon and received its name "little apple" due to the specific shape of the fruits. The fruits of the variety are quite large, comparable in size to a small plum.

Oil from Poumal olives is distinguished by a mild taste. In blends with other local varieties, such as Olivière and Verdale, it helps to balance the flavor, complementing the intense and green notes of other varieties.

The variety is cultivated as organic in a number of farms in the region. Clones of this variety are represented in the collection of the arboretum in Canet-en-Roussillon.
