The variety is also known under the names Provenzana, Provenzale, Francese, and Oliva di Francia. It is a local Italian variety found primarily in the province of Potenza in the Vulture area and in the Capitanata area in Apulia, growing as individual trees in old plantations.

Provenzalana is of dual purpose; the fruits are used both for oil production and for consumption in fresh or processed form. The oil yield averages 18.74%, and the flesh-to-pit ratio is 4.58.
