The variety is an autochthonous Italian cultivar, widespread in Lazio, Marche, Umbria, and Abruzzo. Genetic studies suggest that the variety has a clonal origin. In literature, Procanica is often listed as a synonym for the Rosciola variety.
The purpose of the variety is olive oil production. It is characterized by a short flowering period and an average fruit set level under open pollination.
