The Babić variety is autochthonous to Croatia and has been grown in Northern Dalmatia for hundreds of years. It is a wine grape variety used for the production of red wines, characterized by a medium-late ripening period.
The plant has hermaphroditic flowers and a five-lobed, medium-dissected leaf. The cluster is medium-sized, conical, and of medium density. The berry is medium-sized, black, and round or oval in shape. The variety is demanding regarding growing conditions and is susceptible to grey rot and sour rot.
Wines made from Babić grapes have a deep ruby-red color, a rich taste, and a balanced level of alcohol and tannins. A distinction should be made between the Babić variety and the Babica Plosnata variety, which are different categories.
