The variety is autochthonous to the Canary Islands, where it has been known since the 16th century, although genetic studies link it to the Portuguese variety Alfrocheiro Preto. It has a number of synonyms, such as Albarín Negro, Caiño Gordo, and Bastardo Negro. It is classified exclusively as a wine grape variety.
The plant is characterized by early bud break and early fruit ripening. It forms small, delicate bunches. The variety is considered difficult to cultivate and has a limited planting area, although it possesses good adaptation to local volcanic soils.
Wines from this variety possess a deep dark color with purple hues, high acidity, and elegant tannins. The organoleptic profile features notes of dark berries, cherry, and violets, as well as balsamic, mineral, and spicy nuances, including black pepper.
