The variety is traditionally grown in the Veneto region, especially in the hilly area of Colli Euganei. The grapes are used to create varietal wines and are also included in blends with other local white varieties. The name of the variety presumably comes from the word pigna, which means pinecone, due to the dense and compact shape of the cluster.
The cluster is of medium or small size, conical in shape, and often equipped with a small wing. The berries are medium-sized, round or slightly oval, and possess thin, delicate skin of a yellow-golden color, which may acquire a copper hue upon ripening. The leaf is medium-sized, pentagonal, and three-lobed.
Wines from this variety are characterized as dry and fresh, with pronounced acidity and a persistent aftertaste with notes of almond. The variety is considered locally adapted to the conditions of the Veneto region and requires careful handling during cultivation due to the thin skin of the berries.
