Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is genetically close to Vermentino and Favorita, but differs in morphology: it has more pronounced leaf lobes and a reddish tint to the shoots. The name comes from the dialect word "pigau" due to the rusty spots that appear on the skin of the berries during ripening.

The plant is of medium maturity, demanding of growing conditions, and yields the best results at altitudes from 300 meters. The variety is sensitive to downy mildew and relatively resistant to powdery mildew.

Used exclusively for winemaking. The wines have a pronounced structure, rich taste, and aromas of Mediterranean herbs and iodine. The variety is used to produce dry, sparkling, and passito-type dessert wines.
