Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety has ancient origins and is autochthonous to the island of Sicily. Its name is associated with the red clay soils characteristic of the Trapani area. Genetic analysis confirmed a relationship with the Sangiovese variety.

The plant has a hermaphrodite flower. The leaf is pentagonal, five-lobed, slightly cleft, with an open lyre-shaped petiolar sinus and medium density pubescence on the underside. Bunches are medium-sized, conical or cylindrical-conical, compact or medium-compact.

Berries are small, round, dark blue, almost black in color, covered with a thick waxy bloom, with thin skin and juicy flesh. The variety belongs to late-ripening groups, prefers limestone-clay soils, and is well adapted to a warm, arid climate.

The variety is susceptible to fungal diseases and frost. Wines made from it possess a deep color, high alcohol and tannin content, and in aroma exhibit notes of cherry, red berries, chocolate, herbs, and spices.
