The variety is an ancient folk selection. Bushes have strong growth and a sprawling shoot growth habit, requiring training. The leaf is medium-sized, rounded, and five-lobed. The bunch is medium to large, cylindrical-conical, often of medium density. Berries are medium to large, rounded, dark blue in color with thick skin and a heavy wax bloom.
Harvesting usually takes place in October. The variety shows good resistance to oidium, but is susceptible to downy mildew. Yield is characterized as good and stable. In the volcanic soils of Campania, the variety can be grown on its own roots.
Piedirosso is a wine variety. Wines made from it possess a deep ruby color, soft tannins, and fresh acidity, with aromas of plum, cherry, blackberry, and mineral notes. It is used both for the production of varietal wines and in blends.
