Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety has ancient origins and is presumed to have been cultivated as early as the time of Ancient Rome. The name Piedirosso translates to "red feet," which refers to the characteristic reddish hue of the lower part of the shoots, resembling pigeon feet, which is also reflected in the name Piede di Palumbo.

This variety is a wine grape intended for the production of ruby-colored red wines with notes of cherry, raspberry, pomegranate, and violet. In volcanic soils, the wines exhibit mineral and smoky undertones, and the taste is characterized by soft tannins and balanced acidity. The main cultivation area is concentrated in the Campania region.
