Picolit is a wine grape variety, the name of which is associated with the small size of the berries or the specific structure of the cluster. A biological characteristic is "floral abortion," causing incomplete pollination and the shedding of a significant portion of the ovaries, which results in very loose and sparse clusters.
The variety is demanding regarding growing conditions, preferring calcareous marl, sandstone, and specific "ponca" type soils. Berry ripening occurs slowly, and harvesting requires exclusively manual labor due to the fragility of the fruit. The variety is used in winemaking to create concentrated dessert wines with pronounced aromas of stone fruits, honey, and flowers.
