The variety is traditionally cultivated in Southwest France and has presumably Basque roots. Its name, Fer, may derive from the hard wood of the vine or from the Latin word for "wild." The variety is used to create both blended wines and monovarietal wines in the Marcillac appellation, where it is known as Mansois.

Wines from this grape are characterized by deep color, dense tannins, and aromas of red currant, fig, and pepper. Morphologically, the variety is characterized by the presence of downy pinkish-white tips on young shoots, medium-sized clusters, and dark-colored berries.
