The variety is a natural hybrid of Traminer and Österreichisch-Weiß. Silvaner is characterized by high yield and susceptibility to frost, chlorosis, downy mildew, powdery mildew, and grey mold.
The clusters of the variety are small, cylindrical-conical in shape, and often dense. The berries are medium-sized, spherical, greenish-yellow in color, turning a golden hue upon ripening, with thick skin.
Wines from this variety are distinguished by a mild, neutral taste with subtle acidity. Depending on the terroir, the bouquet may contain herbaceous, berry-fruit, and citrus tones, as well as notes of fresh hay and mineral shades.
