The variety is a natural hybrid that arose as a result of the natural crossing of the Traminer and Österreichisch Weiß varieties. Its origin is linked to Central Europe, and the first documentary references date back to 1659.
The grape belongs to the wine varieties and is used in winemaking to create white wines with notes of herbs, hay, green apple, or pear. The variety is characterized by early maturity compared to the Riesling variety, which reduces the risk of crop damage by frosts; however, the quality of the produce strongly depends on yield control.
Morphologically, the variety is distinguished by the light green color of the crown of the young shoots. The name Silvaner Gruee is one of the naming variants for this variety in international catalogs.
