Diseases
Root rots are a complex of soil-borne fungal diseases affecting the underground part and the basal zone of plants. The infection manifests latently and leads to a 15–40% reduction in crop productivity.
Mentioned in descriptions 5 232 varieties reference book.
Root rots represent a group of pathologies affecting roots, tillering nodes, and underground internodes. The disease manifests as stand thinning, necrosis and browning of the root system, as well as the appearance of brown spots, streaks, and coatings on the basal part of the stem. External signs are often hidden and masked as nutrient deficiencies or winterkill, which is expressed in plant stunting, stem breakage, empty ears, and shriveled grain.
Disease development depends on a combination of abiotic factors and agronomic conditions. The infection actively progresses under excessive soil moisture, crop rotation violations, monoculture cropping, and the use of infected seed material. Mineral nutrient imbalance, especially potassium and phosphorus deficiency combined with nitrogen excess, reduces the natural immunity of plants, creating favorable conditions for pathogen activity across a wide temperature range.
In breeding practice, resistance to rots is often defined as tolerance—the ability of a plant to maintain productivity when infected. Variety evaluation is conducted on artificial and natural infection nurseries using quantitative disease scales from 1 to 9. Biophysical and conductometric methods are used for rapid analysis of the degree of tissue damage by pathogenic toxins.
Selection based on the description text, not official resistance ratings: such data is not available in registers. Mention indicates that the trait is discussed in the variety's sources; see the variety's profile for details on what is specifically stated.
