Root rots — common wheat

Triticum aestivum L.

A complex of diseases of common wheat caused by soil-borne fungi and oomycetes that infect the root system and the stem base at all growth stages.

In the reference 125 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogens include fungi of the genus Fusarium (F. culmorum, F. oxysporum, F. avenaceum, F. equiseti, F. solani, F. graminearum), Bipolaris sorokiniana, Gaeumannomyces graminis, oomycetes of the genus Pythium, as well as fungi of the genera Alternaria, Rhizoctonia, Wojnowicia, and Pseudocercosporella.

Key symptoms include seedling blight, browning of the coleoptile, primary and secondary roots, and the tillering node. Infection by Fusarium spp. may result in the formation of a pinkish or yellowish mycelial growth, while take-all (Gaeumannomyces graminis) manifests as a characteristic black velvety layer, leading to whiteheads and sterile spikes.
