Downy Mildew of Grapevine

Vitis L.

A fungal-like disease of grapevines caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola. It affects all green parts of the plant, causing the appearance of "oily" spots on leaves and the necrosis of inflorescences and berries.

The pathogen is the obligate oomycete Plasmopara viticola, which overwinters as oospores in fallen leaves and plant debris, remaining viable in the soil for up to five years. The primary symptom of the disease is the appearance of yellowish or light olive "oily" spots on the upper side of the leaf, while in high humidity, a whitish sporulation layer forms on the underside.

The infection spreads to all non-lignified vine organs, including shoots, inflorescences, and rachises, leading to their wilting, deformation, and subsequent tissue necrosis. Due to the lack of resistance in Vitis vinifera species, breeding programs utilize donors with Rpv genes, such as Rpv3, Rpv10, and Rpv12, as well as Pva and Pvr loci identified in wild species of the genus Vitis.
