Apple Moniliosis

Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh.

A fungal disease of apple trees caused by the pathogen Monilia fructigena, manifesting as spring blossom blight and summer-autumn fruit rot. It is characterized by high harmfulness and the absence of specific resistance genes, being determined by a complex quantitative trait.

The primary causative agent of the disease is the fungus Monilia fructigena (teleomorphic stage Monilinia fructigena). The disease occurs in two forms: blossom blight, which affects flowers and shoots during the flowering period, and fruit rot, which causes softening of the flesh and the formation of characteristic concentric circles of sporulation on the fruits.

Unlike a number of other diseases, no specific resistance genes have been identified for apple moniliosis. Varietal resistance is a quantitative trait depending on the morphological features of the fruit, such as the structure of the cuticle, and the physiological responses of the plant to infection.
