Moniliasis (fruit rot)

Monilinia

Moniliasis is a complex fungal disease of fruit crops, manifesting as spring blossom and twig blight or summer fruit rot. The infection causes significant crop damage, leading to browning, wilting of plant parts, and fruit decay.

Mentioned in descriptions 2 310 varieties reference book.

The disease is caused by fungi of the genus Monilinia, which manifest in two main forms. Blossom blight is characterized by the sudden browning and wilting of inflorescences, leaves, and young shoots, creating a 'scorched' tree effect. Fruit rot appears on fruits as rapidly expanding brown spots with softening of the flesh and the formation of concentric grayish-yellow sporulation cushions.

The development of the disease depends directly on weather conditions and the presence of entry points for the infection. Blossom blight progresses during cool, wet weather during flowering, while fruit rot develops under high humidity and warm temperatures. Infection is facilitated by mechanical tissue damage, damage from insects, or other diseases.

Cultivar resistance is evaluated during official state trials by systematically recording the proportion of affected fruits under field conditions. Resistant cultivars possess structural features such as dense skin, high pulp acidity, or the depth of the stalk cavity, which hinder the pathogen's penetration into plant tissues.
