Peach Monilinia Rot

Prunus persica (L.) Batsch

A dangerous fungal disease of peach caused by fungi of the genus Monilinia, manifesting as spring blossom blight and summer fruit rot.

In the reference 75 varieties crop Peach, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causative agents of the disease are fungi of the species Monilinia laxa, Monilinia fructicola, and Monilinia cinerea. The spring form of the infection, known as blossom blight, is characterized by the sudden browning and wilting of flowers, young ovaries, and shoots, which remain hanging on the tree. Gummosis and the appearance of gray-ash sporulation cushions are often observed on the affected parts.

The summer form of the infection affects the fruits, on the skin of which rapidly growing brown spots develop, leading to the softening of the flesh. Later, randomly distributed gray or cream-colored sporodochia form on the surface of the fruits. Infected fruits often undergo mummification and remain on the tree, becoming a reservoir for the infection.

Peach resistance to monilinia rot is a polygenic quantitative trait, and no specific resistance genes with standardized nomenclatural designations have been identified. Breeding efforts focus on identifying genomic regions associated with resistance, while in variety descriptions, susceptibility is assessed empirically based on field observations.
