Pear Scab

Pyrus communis L.

A disease caused by the highly specialized fungus Venturia pirina Aderh. It affects all above-ground organs of the pear tree, including young shoots, where characteristic ulcers develop.

In the reference 489 varieties crop European pear, where this is mentioned in the description.

The causal agent is the ascomycete fungus Venturia pirina Aderh., whose anamorph stage is known as Fusicladium pirinum (Sib.) Fokl. The pathogen is highly specialized and does not infect apple trees. The disease manifests as chlorotic spots with an olive-colored velvety coating on leaves, fruits, and petioles.

Unlike apple scab, the pear scab pathogen often affects young shoots, causing them to crack and form ulcers. On fruits, the infection leads to deformation, skin cracking, and tissue suberization, which significantly reduces the marketability of the crop.

The identification of distinct physiological races for Venturia pirina is not carried out; pathogen variability is considered within the context of geographical populations. The resistance of the European pear is polygenic in nature, and information regarding major genes for monogenic resistance to this pathogen is virtually absent in current literature.
