Vigor — Sweet Chestnut

Castanea sativa Mill.

A complex indicator of the intensity of vegetative mass development in chestnut, evaluated by tree height, trunk diameter, shoot growth, and crown architectonics.

In the reference 19 varieties crop Sweet chestnut, where this is mentioned in the description.

For the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa), vigor is an important breeding trait. High vitality is typical of forest-forming types capable of reaching 30–35 meters, whereas moderate vigor is considered the target when establishing intensive orchards to ensure crown compactness and a high planting density of up to 5000 trees per hectare.

This parameter directly influences cultivation efficiency, the timing of the onset of bearing, and the tree's ability to recover from abiotic stress or damage by pests, such as the chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus). High growth energy during the initial stages of development is also critical for competing with associated species for light.
