Apple Tree Vigor

A biological indicator that determines tree habit and planting patterns in intensive orchards. It is evaluated through measurements of tree height, crown width, and trunk circumference, as well as anatomical characteristics of rootstocks.

For apple breeding and variety testing, a complex system of direct measurements is used, including tree height, crown width, and trunk girth at 15 cm above the soil surface. Based on this data, the volume and projection area of the crown are calculated, as well as the trunk cross-sectional area. For rootstock diagnostics, anatomical methods for examining xylem vessels and root hairs are also employed.

Scion-rootstock combinations are divided into groups: vigorous, semi-vigorous, and low-vigor (dwarf and semi-dwarf). For example, the height of 15-year-old trees on dwarfing interstocks can vary from 2.8 to 3.7 meters. There are no clear numerical boundaries for these categories due to the dependence of the indicator on tree age and growing conditions.

Tree vigor determines agrotechnical decisions: the choice of planting pattern, training and pruning methods, and the necessity of installing support trellises. Excessive vegetative growth in vigorous varieties often comes at the expense of fruiting and light penetration within the canopy; therefore, low-vigor combinations are preferred for intensive horticulture.
