Drought tolerance of olive

Olea europaea L.

The ability of Olea europaea to adapt to moisture deficit, evaluated through physiological and biochemical parameters and water regime. The tolerance of cultivars is determined by a complex of morphological traits, osmoregulation, and photosynthetic efficiency.

In the reference 33 varieties crop Olive, where this is mentioned in the description.

The evaluation of olive drought tolerance is based on the study of the water regime, including leaf water retention capacity and water potential, which can drop to -4.0 MPa or lower under stress. A critical indicator is the relative electrolyte leakage, reflecting the degree of cell membrane damage during dehydration.

Biochemical markers play an important role in adaptation, in particular the accumulation of osmolytes such as proline and mannitol, as well as changes in the profile of phenolic compounds in the roots, including the ratio of oleuropein to verbascoside. The functional status is assessed by chlorophyll fluorescence indicators, in particular the Fv/Fm value, and stomatal conductance.

From an agronomic perspective, the drought tolerance of cultivars directly affects the regularity of fruiting and yield stability. Cultivars are classified into tolerance groups based on cluster analysis of a set of morphophysiological indicators, which allows for the optimization of irrigation strategies and cultivar selection for arid regions.
