The variety originates from the Cicignano locality, located in the municipality of Montemurlo, Tuscany region. It is recognized as an independent cultivar and included in the national register of varieties, and is also preserved in the seed bank of the National Research Council of Italy.
The fruits of this variety do not turn black upon ripening, which results in a high chlorophyll content in the final product. The variety is primarily used for oil production, often in blends with other typical Tuscan varieties, such as Moraiolo, Frantoio, and Leccino.
