The variety is a representative of the species Vitis vinifera and is historically known as the basis for the production of sweet fortified wines of Madeira, known as Malmsey. Genetically, the variety is identical to Malvasia di Lipari, which is grown in Italy, Greece, Spain, and Croatia.
The plant belongs to the group of low-yielding varieties. The variety shows low resistance to diseases, in particular to powdery mildew, and is prone to fungal diseases and rot in conditions of high humidity. It prefers a dry climate and well-drained soils.
The purpose of the variety is exclusively the production of high-quality dessert wines with an intense aroma of dried fruits, honey, chocolate, and spices, characterized by pronounced acidity.
