The variety is the result of crossing Vital and Uva Cão varieties. The grape has a hermaphrodite flower and forms large clusters. It belongs to late-maturing varieties, characterized by high yield and significant susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea.
The purpose of the variety is winemaking. Wines produced from it are full-bodied, with good texture and acidity, often containing spicy notes and hints of dried fruits such as raisins and figs. The crop is localized on the island of Madeira, where it is the primary variety for the production of sweet Malmsey-style wines.
