Cultivated apple varieties are difficult to propagate via cuttings due to their low rhizogenic potential; therefore, this method is primarily used for the propagation of clonal rootstocks.

Apple cultivars are characterized by a biological barrier to adventitious root formation, making cuttage an inefficient method for their propagation, unlike in berry crops. In commercial nursery production, grafting is preferred for producing varietal trees, as attempts at direct rooting of scion cuttings often yield no results.

Softwood cuttings are successfully used for the propagation of clonal rootstocks such as 54-118 or 62-396. Achieving success requires creating a specific microclimate with 85–100% humidity, maintaining soil and air temperatures of approximately 25–30°C, and using rooting stimulants. The most favorable period for harvesting cuttings is limited to late May and the first half of June.

Propagation via root cuttings is possible; however, it does not preserve the varietal characteristics of the scion if the tree is grafted, as the new plant will reflect the properties of the rootstock. Using this method to obtain varietal material is only appropriate when working with own-rooted source specimens.
