To determine the ploidy of apple trees, a cytological method of direct chromosome counting in vegetative bud meristems is used. In breeding, three main groups of cultivars are distinguished: diploids (2x), triploids (3x), and tetraploids (4x). The diploid chromosome number in apple trees is 34, while the triploid reaches 51 chromosomes.
Triploid apple cultivars are characterized by higher and more regular yields, reducing the alternate bearing typical of diploids. Triploid fruits usually have greater weight, better flavor, and improved storage quality. Furthermore, triploid trees often demonstrate greater vigor and enhanced self-fertility, while the breeding of such cultivars is often focused on combining fruit quality with resistance to apple scab.
