Apricot Grafting and Budding

Prunus armeniaca L.

Apricot grafting requires a rigorous selection of scion-rootstock combinations due to high biological incompatibility with most stone fruit crops, which directly affects tree longevity.

In the reference 19 varieties crop Apricot, where this is mentioned in the description.

The apricot has strict requirements for rootstocks. The use of cherry or sweet cherry is not recommended due to low compatibility, while myrobalan plum improves winter hardiness but requires support due to the difference in tissue growth rates. Grafting onto peach is unacceptable due to reverse incompatibility caused by the hardness of the apricot wood. The best productivity indicators are achieved when using seedlings of 'zherdela' (wild apricot) or Manchurian wild forms.

The choice of rootstock is critical for regulating sap flow and the tree's resistance to root collar rot and spring frosts. Technologically, budding is carried out from late July to early August during the active sap flow phase characteristic of stone fruits, using a dormant bud. Spring scion grafting is performed using classical methods before bud break, with the most important success factor being the consideration of genetic relatedness to prevent rejection.
