Variety traits

Almond self-fertility

Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D. A. Webb

The genetically determined ability of an almond tree to be fertilized by its own pollen, governed by the presence of the dominant Sf allele. This trait enables the establishment of single-cultivar orchards and reduces yield dependence on cross-pollination.

In the reference 86 varieties crop Almond, where this is mentioned in the description.

Self-fertility in almond is controlled by the dominant Sf allele, which encodes a non-functional S-RNase. Unlike self-incompatible cultivars that possess a gametophytic incompatibility system, plants with this allele do not reject their own pollen, which ensures pollen tube germination and fruit set.

The level of self-fertility is assessed by the percentage of fruit set following branch isolation. Self-incompatible cultivars under such conditions show a fruit set ranging from 0% to 4%, whereas self-fertile ones demonstrate consistently high rates. The evaluation methodology also includes molecular genetic analysis of the S-locus and microscopic monitoring of pollen tube growth.

The introduction of self-fertile cultivars allows for growing almonds in single-cultivar plantations, simplifying orchard management and harvest organization. This trait minimizes risks associated with adverse weather conditions during bloom, which limit the activity of pollinating insects that are critical for self-incompatible cultivars.
