Potato dry rot

Solanum tuberosum L.

A fungal disease of potato tubers during storage caused by a complex of species of the genus Fusarium or Phoma exigua. It is characterized by tissue decay resulting in cavities, wrinkling of the skin, and subsequent mummification of the tuber.

The disease is caused by phytopathogenic fungi of the genus Fusarium, such as Fusarium sambucinum, F. oxysporum, F. solani, F. avenaceum, F. culmorum, F. gibbosum, as well as the causal agent of dry gangrene, Phoma exigua var. exigua. Generally accepted races or pathotypes for these pathogens in relation to potatoes have not been identified, and resistance in cultivars is considered a quantitative trait with no known specific resistance genes.

Symptoms appear after 2–4 months of storage as depressed, grayish-brown spots with wrinkled skin. The tissue under the affected areas becomes loose, turns brown, and forms cavities filled with white, yellow, or reddish mycelium. Under high humidity, sporodochia may appear on the surface of the spots, and the tuber gradually dries out and mummifies.
