Pests

Apple Aphids

Malus domestica (Suckow) Borkh.

A complex of pests belonging to the Aphididae family that damage apple tree organs and facilitate the transmission of viruses. The primary species include green apple aphid, rosy apple aphid, and woolly apple aphid, which differ in the nature of tissue damage.

In the reference 85 varieties crop Apple, where this is mentioned in the description.

The green apple aphid colonizes young shoots and the undersides of leaves, causing them to curl and stunting growth, while honeydew promotes the development of sooty mold. The rosy apple aphid forms characteristic red or yellowish swellings, known as galls, on the leaves.

The woolly apple aphid infests the bark and roots, leaving a white waxy residue and inducing the formation of galls through which secondary infections penetrate. The apple-grass aphid also occurs, having a life cycle that alternates between apple trees and cereal crops.

There is intraspecific differentiation of aphids into biotypes capable of infesting specific apple genotypes. Resistance to the woolly apple aphid is linked to the presence of specific genes, for instance, the Er gene in the Northern Spy cultivar; however, standardized genetic markers for aphid resistance are used less frequently in breeding than those for fungal diseases.
