Grapevine growing season

The period of active grapevine functions, beginning when the stable mean daily air temperature exceeds 10 °C and ending when it drops to similar values. It is used for planning agronomic practices and evaluating the suitability of varieties for the climatic conditions of a region.

The grapevine growing season is measured in days from the onset of biological activity to berry ripening. Based on this indicator, varieties are divided into groups: from ultra-early (up to 105 days) to very late (165 days or more). To assess the thermal requirements of varieties, the sum of active temperatures above 10 °C is additionally used.

The duration of the growing season determines the timing of pruning, green operations, and harvesting. A mismatch between the length of a variety's growing season and the region's climatic conditions leads to poor cane maturation, low winter hardiness, and the inability of the berries to reach the required quality standards.
