Cultivation
Pear rootstock
Pyrus communis L.
The selection of a rootstock for pear is complicated by the biological incompatibility of many cultivars with quince and the specificity of a deep root system. To address incompatibility issues, interstock inserts are applied or specialized clonal rootstocks of intraspecific origin are used.
In the reference 294 varieties crop European pear, where this is mentioned in the description.
A key feature of pear rootstocks is the pronounced physiological incompatibility of many cultivars with quince, which manifests as breakage at the graft union during early growth stages. To overcome this barrier, interstock inserts of compatible cultivars are used, placed between the scion and the rootstock. When using Pyrus communis L. seedling rootstocks, vigorous trees are formed with a strong taproot system that is sensitive to the water table level.
Modern breeding is focused on developing clonal rootstocks within the pear species, such as PG-2, PG-12, and PG-17-16, which ensure good compatibility and high winter hardiness. In contrast, the use of mountain ash, hawthorn, or serviceberry is considered ineffective and requires constant maintenance of wild rootstock suckers due to impeded nutrient transport through the graft union.
