Cultivation

Grafting and budding

Grafting and budding are agrotechnical methods of combining a scion and a rootstock into a single biological organism. This allows for controlling tree growth, accelerating fruiting, and adapting varietal qualities to specific soil and climatic conditions.

Mentioned in descriptions 3 506 varieties reference book.

Grafting and budding involve combining two plants: the scion, which determines the varietal characteristics of the fruit, and the rootstock, which forms the root system and the lower part of the trunk. This method allows for the combination of the best traits of two cultivars, creating a seedling with specified growth parameters and resistance to soil-borne pests and diseases.

Cultivation efficiency depends on the compatibility of the components, the quality of the union at the graft site, and the correct choice of rootstock for the specific soil type and climatic risks of the site. The choice of rootstock determines tree vigor, which is critical for planning planting density in intensive orchard management and the timing of the tree's entry into the fruiting stage.

Care for grafted plants includes the mandatory removal of rootstock suckers and the performance of root pruning to prevent the scion from developing its own roots. The graft union is the most vulnerable zone; therefore, agronomists consider the planting depth of the seedling relative to the soil level to protect it from mechanical damage, frost, or decay.
