Grafting and Budding of Sweet Cherry

Prunus avium (L.) L.

Grafting of sweet cherry requires consideration of its early start to the growing season and high sensitivity to environmental conditions. Specifics include the use of thick scions and limiting rootstock age to five years.

In the reference 28 varieties crop Sweet cherry, where this is mentioned in the description.

Spring grafting of sweet cherry must be performed as early as possible before active bud swelling begins, as delays result in a sharp decrease in survival rates. For successful results, it is critical to use only thick scions, and their storage requires low temperatures to prevent premature budding and rotting.

During budding, the shield is cut without wood, preferably in the morning hours at an air humidity of no less than 60 percent. The best rootstocks are sweet cherry, sour cherry, or myrobalan plum, whereas grafting onto plum is difficult due to potential incompatibility. For safety reasons, rootstocks should be no older than five years to avoid tree death.
