Grape Grafting and Budding

Vitis vinifera L.

Propagation and top-working technology for grapes, complicated by intense sap flow (bleeding) and strict requirements for callus formation temperatures. The method specifically utilizes phylloxera-resistant rootstocks and chip budding to maintain the vegetative activity of the rootstock.

In the reference 25 varieties crop Common grape vine, where this is mentioned in the description.

The grape grafting process requires accounting for the physiological phenomenon of "bleeding"—the intense exudation of xylem sap, which hinders tissue union. For successful callus formation, the crop requires a temperature range of +20…+30°C and strictly controlled humidity. Chip budding is preferred as it allows for the retention of rootstock leaves and lateral shoots, maintaining its normal vegetative activity.

Grafting is employed to ensure phylloxera resistance through the use of rootstocks from American species and their hybrids, which necessitates consideration of the compatibility of specific combinations. The method is also used for the restoration of damaged vines, varietal replacement, and improving pollination quality in cultivars with functionally female flower types.
