Radish root cracking

A physiological disorder of radish characterized by the formation of cracks on the root skin due to uneven tissue growth, over-maturity, or nutrient imbalance.

To assess the severity of radish damage, a visual classification is used, distinguishing moderate splitting for a single crack and severe for multiple cracks. In breeding practice, the key metric is the percentage of cracked roots in a sample, which is used to determine varietal resistance.

Cracking occurs due to rapid pulp expansion caused by irregular irrigation, excessive nitrogen fertilization, or delayed harvesting. In addition to the loss of commercial appearance, damaged roots are at risk of secondary fungal infections penetrating through the cracks, leading to product rot.
