Rust of common wheat

Triticum aestivum L.

A group of dangerous fungal diseases of common wheat caused by specialized species of rust fungi, which can reduce yields by up to 65% and impair grain quality during epiphytotics.

In the reference 1 722 varieties crop Bread wheat, where this is mentioned in the description.

The main pathogen species include the causal agents of leaf rust Puccinia triticina, stripe rust Puccinia striiformis, and stem rust Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici. The diseases manifest as characteristic pustules: orange-brown on leaves for leaf rust, lemon-yellow in the form of longitudinal stripes for stripe rust, and dark brown linear formations on stems and sheaths for stem rust.

Pathogen populations possess high genetic diversity, evolving into new aggressive physiological races, such as Ug99. Genetic protection is based on the use of specific resistance genes denoted as Lr (leaf), Yr (yellow/stripe), and Sr (stem). Some genes, such as Lr34/Yr18/Sr57, provide complex adult-plant resistance to slow disease development.
